resistance

In medicine, resistance is the fact that an organism is protected against viruses or toxins, for example. In humans, there are resistances that can protect the body against infections. But germs themselves can become resistant, too. Bacteria, for example, can become resistant to antibiotics, so that these drugs are less effective or do not work at all against resistant bacteria.
