There are several ways to close a wound. A wound can be sutured or sewn in a continuous stitch, or with individual stitches where a knot is made for each stitch and the suture material is cut. To try and lessen the scar, wounds are sometimes closed with a subcutaneous stitch. This involves stitching underneath the surface of the skin to bring the edges of the wound close together. A range of suture materials is available. There are stitches that are absorbed by the body and others that need to be taken out. There is also a form of staple that a surgeon can use with a kind of stapler. This can close a wound quickly but is a lot more expensive than stitching by hand.
